Swiss made automatic movement and is packed in a massive stainless steel case. Sized at 45 mm in diameter, the watch is quite large, but, thanks for relatively short lugs, may fit even thinner wrists.

Its black dial features huge, but somehow crude-looking, Roman numerals painted with a luminescent substance.

The hour and minute hands also received their share of SuperLuminova, but that didn’t make them look any prettier. I would even say that both hands are on the uglier side of it, especially when compared to the 2006 year’s Riviera Chronograph model in red gold and rubber (ref. M0A08712.) with their beautiful dauphine hands.

Certain styles or designs become so deeply associated with specific brands that they become almost synonymous with them. The best example in the watch industry is, of course, the Oyster Perpetual. The Oyster case was designed and introduced to the market by Rolex in 1931. In 78 years, the Oyster case still forms a majority of Rolex’s $ 3 billion sales. This is also the most visible part of the Rolex brand and quite surprisingly, Rolex clients are not tired of the design! The next best example that comes to my mind is Baume & Mercier’s Riviera. Originally introduced as a sports watch, Riviera with distinctive gold and steel features has an unusual 12-sided Bezel. When I think of Baume & Mercier, I think of the 12-sided Riviera. I’m not the only one. Riviera now 36 years old is still the largest selling brand from the house of Baume & Mercier and has gone through many transformations. Riviera is not just known for its distinctive and stylish looks, it is also known for its performance. To test Riviera’s durability and precision, this watch was mounted on the wheel of a BMW M1 before the start of the Le Mans 24-hour race. It withstood high speeds as well as the pressure of fast acceleration. Riviera was not affected by the centrifugal force of spinning wheels, nor by heavy rainfall or intense heat from overworked disc breaks. At the end of the race the watch ran with as much precision as it had in the beginning. That is Baume & Mercier Riviera for you.  The origin of Baume & Mercier goes back to 1830 with the Baume family who came from Les Bois village in the Swiss Jura mountains. At first, Societe Baume Feres (company so named at the time of inception) made enameled pocket watches. In 1844, Joseph Baume went to England to set up business and relationships there. They made watches signed ‘Waterloo’, ‘Diviko’ and ‘Sirdar’ and opened markets as far away as Australia. This proved to be a very succesful partnership and the company won many recognitions. William Baume retired from the business in 1937 followed by Paul Mercier and the company fell into the hands of jeweler Constantine de Gorski. Gorski accompanied by his master jewel setter and companion Robert Peron converted the brand into one of the top jewelry brands of Europe only rivaled by the likes of Piaget and Cartier. Their fortunes would be strangely entwined later! After the Second World War, Baume and Mercier concentrated on conventional men’s watches, sports chronographs and ladies’ jewelry watches. In 1965, the Piaget family took control of Baume & Mercier. This resulted in the creation of a range of world’s thinnest calendar watches with a mini-rotor. In the early seventies, the Piaget family decided that Baume & Mercier should invest in electronic tuning fork movements. But, Baume et Mercier continued to invest more and more in Quartz movements. The sign of decay was round the corner! At the end of 1983, Baume & Mercier temporarily ceased production of mechanical watches. The company’s fall was imminent. By 1988, Christian and Yves Piaget were getting dragged down by Baume & Mercier and were persuaded to sell 60 per cent of their stake in Piaget holding and the entire business of Baume & Mercier to Cartier Monde S.A. in Paris. By 1993, the Cartier Group had become the sole owner of both Piaget and Baume & Mercier. Readers might think that the ultimate jewelry company with three of the top brands of the world had arrived and would have had an incredible future. That was not be. Soon thereafter, the ownership of the Cartier Group including Piaget and Baume & Mercier, got transferred again to the hands of the Richemont Group. This time it was good news. Finally, the world began to see the emergence of the third most powerful brand conglomerate after the Swatch Group and Rolex S.A. Baume & Mercier rightly began to look towards America. The Hamptons is a magical place, a mixture of authentic tradition and modernity in the Suffolk county on the east end of Long Island, NY. Amongst the notable residents of the city of Hampton are Calvin Klein, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ralph Lauren, Steven Spielberg and others. It was here that Baumer & Mercier found inspiration in 1994 for a classic wrist watch that it decided to name ‘Hampton’. Hampton Classic is unique due to its attractive design, aesthetics and refinement; made for those who appreciate traditional values and the comfort of splendid things. Baume & Mercier also created its feminine version – the Hampton Spirit. There are many design variants such as the Hampton Milleis, Hampton City Chronograph, etc. One might think that between the Riviera and the Hampton, the Baume & Mercier story almost ends. The company is now into serious innovation mode and the new models of Capeland also hold enormous promise. An effort at falling back to its jewelry tradition is its new model Diamont. One has to see how well Diamont is accepted in the market.
