Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer - Baselworld 2009's winner ...

Glashütte Original was one of the most impressive brands at this year’s Baselworld. Last week i was invited by Glashütte Original to see the Baselworld novelties which are about to be delivered to the dealers.

With the Senator Meissen Tourbillon and the Senator Chronometer, Glashütte Original has two watches in my Baselworld 2009 top 10. Merdal Güler, brand manager for the Netherlands, and Wim Koster, moderator of the GO forum at Horomundi, invited a few friends for dinner in the College Hotel in Amsterdam. It was an evening in the excellent company of good friend, with great food and amazing watches. At Horomundi Wim posted a full report of the evening and all watches. Wim was wearing his beautiful Pano Reserve… Oh, and all photos are made by Edwin!

Before dinner we had a nice glass of bubbles in the garden of the College Hotel. Sitting there outside in a nice and quiet place in the middle of Amsterdam was a strange experience. Amsterdam is not one of the most quiet places on earth We talked about watches in general, the watch industry and of course the all new collection Glashütte Original presented at Baselworld this year. And while talking we got the chance to see them all. My absolute favorite… the Senator Chronometer .

With it’s classic dial it looks like a vintage ship’s chronometer. The dial is slightly off-white which looks very attractive with the classic roman numbers. Besides the great looks, functionally it’s also a winner. The typical Glashütte Original PanoDate has been improved and now changes date instantly at midnight, while other PanoDate models take around 20 minutes to change date. Another great function is the day/night indication dot. Perfect for setting the time. Another great feature for setting time, is that the second hand resets to 12 when the crown is pulled. And yet another superb feature for setting time, is that the minute hands jumps in full minutes when the time is adjusted. I am deeply impressed with this achievement of Glashütte Original… Of the big brands the Senator Chronometer is the absolute the winner of Baselworld 2009.

Glashutte Original is a German watch manufacture along the lines of A Lange & Sohn. While not up to the technical prowess or level of finishing and handwork that A Lange is known for, Glashutte Original makes a very high quality watch, comparably to Swiss Brands such as Jaeger Le Coultre.

The watch that I purchased is the Glashutte Original Senator Sixties. This watch appealed to me because of the vintage/classic styling and pie pan shaped dial. The classic appearance is subtle, understated and extremely elegant.

The silver dial has the Glashutte Original logo on it, and GLASHUTTE I/SA written at the 6pm. The domed Sapphire Crystal is very curved, and shows very nicely, adding that classic old world charm with new world reliability and clean lines. The 39mm case wears a bit small, but when worn with a dress or casual shirt this watch looks amazing.

I have the strap on an aftermarket Brown Hirsch Classic Gator, but the watch came on a dark blue classic style belly gator strap of similar proportions and style. The strap in my opinion goes very well with it, but I think this is one of those styles that either you love or hate, as it is quite different from Breitling, Rolex and Omega.

The back of the watch is absolutely beautiful. The beveled sapphire crystal back allows you to see the side of the 21K Gold Rotor, as well as a very clear view of the in-house Caliber 39-52 movement, which is decorated very nicely. As you might notice, this movement differs from most swiss movements in that it uses a 3/4 plate, which is characteristic of German movements from Glashutte.

There it is on my wrist… before a day at the office. Works extremely well with the shirt and jacket, not quite as well with shorts and t-shirts.

The Glashutte Original Senator Chronograph XL Watch has two sub-dials located at 3 and 9 o’clock. Luminous lance-shaped hands indicate the time while the hour markers are in clear contoured appliqués.

The watch dial has a scratch-resistant convex sapphire crystal with antireflective coatings. The start, stop and reset functions of the chronograph maybe operated using the buttons on the side of the case.
