Among today’s IWC timepieces , the Portuguese (7-Day) Automatic is unquestionably one of the best.  A bold statement to be sure, but there’s lots to back it up: this model respectfully follows the historical design laid down by the very first Portuguese watch IWC created back in the 1930’s (a large, highly legible and extremely accurate wristwatch that would give up nothing to pocket watch performance), it’s extremely handsome, and it has tremendous presence on the wrist.  What’s more, this IWC watch possesses one of the most interesting self-winding mechanical movements in current production.  Definitely a solid resume!

While not a dress watch in the strict definition, having quite a tall case, the IWC Portuguese Automatic can in fact serve ably in this role, particularly for men with substantial wrists.  The dial certainly gives all that can be desired here, being timeless in its detailing, and very elegant.  Just take a look at the first Portuguese watch that IWC made for clients Rodriguez and Texeira , and you can see that this model has inherited all the good design DNA.  (The graceful leaf hands and gleaming minute track alone create an almost irresistible flood of desire among the horologically weak-willed!)

Because the dial is so expansive, the subsidiary seconds and power reserve indicators don’t even create the slightest hint of clutter.  Quite the opposite, in fact–they look sophisticated as all get out, and give just the right amount of technical interest to face that might be too formal in appearance for some watch fans.  Needless to say, the versatility factor of this IWC Portuguese watch is high, and lets the watch fit in equally well with formal business attire, or weekend wear like jeans, sport shirts and such.

The backside of the IWC Portuguese Automatic is an absolute thrill!  If you’ve grown weary of small movements shoehorned into large cases so a watch brand can throw old movements into new designs and cut costs, this timepiece will make you smile.  The in-house IWC 51011 caliber is the largest diameter self-winding movement in current production, and fills the 42.3mm case right to its edge.  To show off every millimeter of this Grand Canyon of watch calibers, the sapphire crystal exhibition window occupies virtually the entire surface of the back.

While retaining the classical appearance of the original and legendary Portuguese first made in the 1930s with its appliqu�d Arabic numerals, railway-style minute chapter ring and slim, swallow-style hands, it comes with all the finest features the company has to offer today: an exclusive IWC Pellaton winding system, classical small seconds hand and seven-day power reserve display. Together with other new and more advanced features such as the convex, coated sapphire glass, the two-piece case or the back with its screw thread and sapphire glass, the Portuguese Automatic is the watch that would be developed in Schaffhausen today if those two Portuguese businessmen were to drop in with a request for an unusually large and precise wristwatch. the reason is that the deployment is not made in-hosue at IWC and comes supplied from a 3rd party and assayed by the Berne Swiss office.
