Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Mechanica 55: 3 Watches, 55 Complications ...

This week at a star-studded party held at the spectacular Cipriani Hotel in Venice, Italy,  Jaeger-LeCoultre CEO Jérôme Lambert officially unveiled the Hybris Mechanica Grand Sonnerie.  Actually if you look closely in the photo below the watch appears to be missing from the safe (the top-center?) – but rest assured the watch was on hand for the evening!

Regular readers of this blog may recall that back in June gave you the first look at the Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Hybris Mechanica Grande Sonnerie – a piece we deemed at the time as the new “King of Complications” for its tally of 26 functions and 1300 components in one – yes one – single watch (if you missed this article go check it out now!).  At this time we previewed not only the Grand Sonnerie but also the 2 other grand complications (the Gyrotourbillon and the Reverso a Tryptique) that Jaeger-LeCoultre would be offering as a part of a 3-piece, $2.5 million set, complete with a 2,600 pound German-made Doettling safe (which by the way has a special sound system installed that enables the actual chiming of the Grand Sonnerie to be heard outside the safe even when it is securely locked!).  The set was created in part to showcase Jaeger-LeCoultre’s greatest achievements over the brand’s long history.

At the time of our original article it was not clear to us what the significance of the number “55″ in “Hybris Mechanica 55″ was – but now we know.  55 is the total # of complications represented in this incredible trio of watches.  Not bad, eh?

Now, as for those “26″ complications in the Grand Sonnerie (the left-most watch in the above photo)- we have seen Jaeger-LeCoulter’s official listing, which we present to you here:

Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso 986 Duodate Limited Edition Watch

Jaeger-LeCoultre is presenting this Grande Reverso Duodate as a classic use of the Reverso case. On one side of the JLC 986 is guilloche engraved silvered dial with the time, subsidiary seconds dial, and a large "open" date display (not a fan of these panoramic open date windows, and look forward to this trend ending soon). Overall, this side of the watch is attractive but nothing special. Reverse the case with a flip as is iconic of this line and you get another watch face in black with a synchronized 24 hour hand that serves as a day/night indicator. Frankly the design is in fact classic Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, but isn't very exciting other than that. The watch is called "Duodate," but of course only has one date. Who is naming these watches? The 986 Duodate will be available in two limited edition models. First is a 52mm x 31.3mm wide steel case version in 1500 pieces, and another 19k pink gold version in 500 pieces. Inside the watches is a manually-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre 986 mechanical movement. Despite having just one crown for setting the two times, Jaeger-LeCoultre assures that the process is simple and setting one time should not disturb the setting of the other time. For the traveler who likes the Reverso case types and wants two time zones in a classic package, this is a fine watch. Plus it has the benefit of being a limited edition and attractive. Otherwise it falls a bit short of feeling special or unique amongst other, potentially more interesting watches in this lineup.

Originally created for polo players in the Indian Army, the Reverso watch is named after its reversible case. The case of the timepiece measures 31.3mm in width and 52mm in height. “Grande” in the name of the watch refers to the fact that the case of the timepiece is the biggest one ever designed for a Reverso watch. Within the case lies the in-house manufactured manually wound calibre 986 movement. According to the watchmaking house, in spite of the fact that the two time zones are set with just one crown, the process is not difficult and setting two time zones should not interfere with one another. The Grande Reverso Duodate watch is perfect for the travelers who like the classic Reverso case and want their watch to display more than one time zone.
