In my last podcast (#23) I started an occasional series called “My Local London” where I share some of the things about London that I find interesting, unusual and fun, as someone who has lived here for over 20 years. In that podcast, I talked about The Fourth Plinth on Trafalgar Square. Today, I’d like to share with you a riverside walk we did the other day from Richmond to Hampton Wick. I’m doing this by way of a written post instead of a podcast as I didn’t bring my digital recorder with me on the walk - and also, I’ll be including some directions about the walk so you may want to print out this post if you want to go on the walk yourself.

One of the best things about London is the River Thames, which bisects the city from West to East. You can walk along most of the Thames Path across Central London through some of the city’s most historic sites. You can also head out East towards the sea or West up towards the source. I’m particulary fond of the western segments from Hammersmith westwards. You can do most of them in short, manageable legs as there are many tube or train stations that make it convenient to walk along in half or full day chunks.

The walk we did this week started at Richmond station. Coming out of the station, turn left and walk along the high street (The Quadrant) full of shops, cafes and restaurants. Richmond has the feel of a lively, cosmopolitan - and affluent - town and you could spend quite awhile shopping in the upmarket boutiques and refreshing yourself with cappucinos and lingering over lunch. But we were out for fresh air and exercise so we strode past them all briskly, heading down The Quadrant until Duke Street where we turned right.

Duke Street open out onto Richmond Green . Walking diagonally left across the Green, you suddenly have a vast sense of space after the confines of your tube or train journey and the hustle and bustle of the high street. At the far corner, aim for Old Palace Lane, a cute little street of workers cottages that look like they have come straight out of Wordsworth’ s Lake District - but no doubt costing millions these days!

Hello! I'm back in London for another customer training event. I landed Tuesday night and had a very difficult start! The airline lost my luggage, the hotel lost my reservation and the taxi driver got lost. GREAT FUN! I knew there wasn't much that could change things so I weathered the fun. The hotel put me in a great old resort for the night and provided taxi service to work the next morning. Luggage didn't come until Friday morning. I had to do some serious shopping to fill in the gap! I guess the good news is that the luggage was found. I just hope I get the mileage for the bag's journey, as it went from Boston to California, back to Boston and then to London. Nice little holiday . . . The Palace was hosting a Royal Flower Show so we wandered the gardens, shopped the stalls, had lunch and toured the castle. We took the train in and then a boat on the Thames to get there. From our ride on the Thames - I love the stovepipe chimneys. The second is a longboat - people actually live in these - our version of a houseboat I guess! Oh, while we were wandering the gardens we drank something called Pims. This is a typical "garden strolling drink" in England. Fruit juice, Chopped Fruit, and some incredibly strong alcohol. Yum! Oh, we also had champagne. Those flowers were really bright and pretty by the time we finished with that! And if I don't sound enough like a lush already, I also sampled honey mead today. OMG, yum. I tell you, if this is the mead that Harry Potter and his pals were drinking at the Three Broomsticks Pub, I have a whole newfound respect for them. I don't think I would recommend it to children. I'm glad my shot was small, but it sure does go down easy!

We picked up our rental car, which was supposed to be a Ford Focus, but Hertz upgraded us to a Toyota Camry. A very nice car, and good mileage too! Our motel, the Hampton Inn, was located in south Memphis not too far from the airport. A very short ride, for sure. Just before we left the airport we grabbed a copy of "The Memphis Flyer," a weekly newspaper that combines politics, arts, and entertainment similar to our "Seattle Weekly." When we checked in to our room, we picked-up a copy of the Memphis daily paper, "The Commercial Appeal." Then when we went right to the "Go Memphis" section (arts and entertainment) and saw that the great Stax artist William Bell was playing a free show that night backed by the great band, The Bo-Keys . It was 8:30 PM and the show started at 7:00 PM. The show would be done or nearly over by the time we pulled it together, so William Bell was a no-go. We looked to see what else was going on and saw that the Pink Palace Museum was having a four day crafts fair and fund raiser at Audubon Park, right near the University Of Memphis. We decided to check that out the next morning just before our trip to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. We both were very hungry, and talked about eating at Popeye’s right across the street. Popeye’s it was for some damn good fried chicken, red beans and rice, and biscuits. For fast food that was some mighty fine eatin’. Plus, the restaurant played some great New Orleans R&B. Popeye’s originated in the Big Easy. We were already on our way to getting in a Southern state of mind. It had been a long day and a good night’s sleep was in order. Tomorrow would be our first full day in the great city of Memphis, Tennessee. We started our day off with a real nice complimentary breakfast in the lobby of the Hampton Inn. A breakfast buffet that included eggs, sausage, grits, biscuits, fruit salad, yogurt, muffins, bagels, sweet rolls, cereals, and three kinds of juice make the Hampton...
