Celebrating their 100 years, Cartier has been unveiling several unique timepieces. One that I am particularly a fan of is the Cartier Rotonde de Cartier central chronograph . The creative design of the dial is what caught my eye. It actually features a two-level dial. The lower dial displays the time, featuring Roman numeral hour markings and blue colored hands. Partially covering the hour hands is the upper dial, operating as the chronograph. The arc shaped aperture displays the 30-minute counter while the second hand sweeps along the upper dial.

The eye-catching dial isn’t the only new element of the Cartier Rotonde de Cartier central chronograph. Inside the 42mm pink gold case lives the new 9907 MC caliber movement, designed and manufactured in house by Cartier. The new movement contains 272 parts and is designed to reduce the energy consumption of the chronograph function. Instead of a cam system, the movement features a column wheel with vertical coupling system for the chronograph.

Usually extending out fairly far from the case, the crown is one of the most unique characteristics of a Cartier watch. Consistent with other models, the elegant Rotonde de Cartier features a classy screw in crown with the typical blue cap on the end. As mentioned earlier, the design is extremely creative. Cartier has registered for a patent on the design of the dial as well as the position of the chronograph.

El calibre 9907 MC en el que se basa este Cartier Rotonde Cronógrafo Central ha sido desarrollado en La Chaux-de-Fonds, que es donde se fabrican los prototipos de la firma. Lo primero que llama la atención de este reloj es que el indicador de la función de cronógrafo está en el centro de la esfera , lo que aporta mayor legibilidad, aunque complica mucho la tarea de los ingenieros de Cartier.

En el nivel inferior de este guardatiempos hay dos agujas azules que indican las horas y los minutos, mientras que en el nivel superior está el cronógrafo en sí (en la imagen de arriba se aprecia mejor). La fina aguja del centro marca los segundos y se pone en marcha accionando el pulsador correspondiente. Por su parte, el gran contador en forma de arco registra todas las rotaciones hasta los 30 minutos.

El mencionado calibre 9907 MC cuenta con una rueda de pilares que gestiona tres funciones : inicio, parada y puesta a cero. Al ser de cuerda manual , el número de componentes (272) es inferior al habitual. Gracias a su embrague vertical , el calibre 9907 MC pasa del habitual mecanismo de engranajes a otro de fricción. Así se consigue reducir el consumo de energía de la función de cronógrafo.

Frente a un cronógrafo tradicional, el Cartier Rotonde Cronógrafo Central tiene tres ventajas: no son necesarias las palancas tradicionales de frenado y bloqueo destinadas a mantener en sus posiciones los elementos indicadores del cronógrafo una vez detenido el contador, la aguja del cronógrafo avanza de manera uniforme desde que se empieza a cronometrar y se puede activar o desactivar el cronógrafo sin impactar notablemente sobre la amplitud...

Cartier Rotonde Central Chronograph Watch

One of the more interesting new Cartier watches at SIHH 2009 this year is the Rotonde Central Chronograph. This watch uses Cartier's new in-house manually-wound 9907 MC calibre movement built in La Chaux de Fonds. The look of the watch is unique to say the least, with the centrally placed chronograph subdial measuring 30 minutes, with a disc that literally covers most of the hour and minute hand on the watch face. The chronograph dial is very easy to read as all 30 minutes are displayed on the central revolving disc. The chronograph seconds are displayed on a thin blued hand that uses the middle 60 second ring. This means that there is no seconds hands for the main time. I think the watch suffers from a bit of concentric circle-itis. I count five functional rings on the face. I also feel as though the hour hand is too long, or the minute hand is too short. I can see this becoming a legibility issue for some people. I do however approve of the large rectangular chronograph pushers, and the new interpretation of the traditional Cartier crown. See the bulbous sapphire crystal cabochon, and dotted periphery that decorate the crown. The dial features some guilloche engraving, while the 18k gold case complements the overall theme of the watch nicely.
