De Grisogono Power Breaker – Feel the Power of F1 Racing

. You immediately imagine cars with sleek sexy shapes calibrated for supreme performance. The Power Breaker created by de Grisogono arouses the same associations. This is a bold F1 instrument inspired by the performance and design maintained by the Formula One tradition.

There is an interesting story behind the Power Breaker creation. In 2005 , head for the Italian Renault F1 team . Gruosi and Briatore became united by sincere friendship and mutually beneficial partnership based upon love for first-rate watches and cars. Briatore was deeply impressed by de Grisogono's timepieces. The pair wanted to develop a watch that would be different from any other F1 timepiece. The watch was meant to remind the aesthetic features of an F1 automobile dashboard and make one feel the power of the sports racing. As a result, there appeared the initial model of the Power Breaker created in gold.

The following dimensions characterize the over-sized case of the timepiece: 54 mm by 43 mm by 15 mm. It is constructed from four distinctive parts - the frame, bezel, back and crown guard. As suggested by Fawaz Gruosi and Flavio Briatore, every detail of the case features motor-racing style. The bezel and the crown of the Power Breaker are embellished by the de Grisogono logo.

An original detail of the Power Breaker's 'racing-car' design is represented by the chronograph push-pieces extending along the case side. An ETA self-winding mechanical movement powers the timepiece. Dubois Depraz fulfilled chronograph subassembly.

The sporty Power Breaker still maintains distinctive de Grisogono style. The numbers on the dial are positioned in a really quirky way - the numbers 2,3, and 4 are featured vertically on the right side of the dial. At 6 o'clock you will notice a 12-hour totalizer, while at 9 o'clock there is a 30-minute totalizer. The centrally placed hour and minute hands improve readability due to red lacquered inlays.

You may not have heard of de Grisogono before, however it’s a company worth following. Not just because of its charismatic head honcho Fawaz Gruosi, but also the lavish watch and jewellery designs. A specialist in black diamonds, Mr Gruosi has always had a passion for the unexpected and unique. Following successes like the Power Breaker (a collaboration with Renault’s F1 king pin Flavio Briatore) and the Occhio Ripetizione Minuti, de Grisogono launched the Meccanico dG last spring for the company’s 15th anniversary. For watch aficionados this may be old news; however I take it upon myself to inform the commons.

With its patented double time display, both analogue and digital, the Meccanico dG design inaugurates a totally novel concept in mechanical Haute Horlogerie. A single mechanical movement, twin timezones and two types of display - the Meccanico dG embodies a major innovation, combining for the first time in the history of horology a digital time display and a mechanical power supply.

The Meccanico dG can be described as a dense cluster of microsystems featuring extremely elaborate cam and gear assemblies. Its exclusive de Grisogono hand wound mechanical movement comprises 651 components. It is composed of an analogue display of the hours and minutes on the upper dial and a digitally displayed second time zone on the lower dial. The mechanically operated digital display of the second time zone shows tens of hours, single hours, tens of minutes and single minutes, all displayed by mobile microsegments driven by an assemblage of 23 cams connected to a set of gears and a triggering and synchronization system.

Despite the power needed to action the double analogue and digital display and the torque required to effect the instantaneous rotation of the digital display’s microsegments, the Meccanico’s hand wound mechanical movement, exclusive to de GRISOGONO, provides a power reserve of some 35 hours, visible through a cambered sapphire back plate on a 90° sectoral display on the movement’s reverse side. The Meccanico dG is being produced in a limited edition of 177 watches.

Fawaz Gruosi, the man behind the DeGrisogono brand has created a gorgeous Formula 1 watch in collaboration with Flavio Briatore (The Who? – Non Race fan), the Renault F1 Team Manager. Called the Power Breaker, the watch is a large automatic (ETA caliber 2892) chronograph (54m x 43mm x 15mm) with F1 styling complete with a signature by Mr. Briatore.
